Milwaukee, Wis., May 17, 2013 – The historic Pfister® Hotel in downtown Milwaukee, which is owned and managed by Marcus® Hotels & Resorts, has completed renovations on a brand-new, high-tech executive boardroom, which offers expansive views of the city skyline and Lake Michigan from its 23rd floor location.

“This creative and dynamic boardroom offers guests revolutionary technology—the first meeting space of its kind in Milwaukee—allowing for interactive and engaging presentations,” said Chris Anderson, senior vice president of sales, marketing and brand development for Marcus Hotels & Resorts.

The Pfister Hotel’s aptly named 23rd floor executive boardroom, Twenty 3, has moved approximately 50 feet down the foyer and was reconstructed to accommodate the new Pfister Club Lounge, an exclusive space for overnight guests, which opened last month. The upscale boardroom now incorporates unmatched presentation technology, including 3-D, gesture recognition, immersive technology and mapping capabilities.

The hotel’s team of onsite technology experts will work with meeting planners and presenters to turn their videos, graphs, PowerPoint and Keynote files into powerful, interactive presentations displayed on two 65-inch, side-by-side monitors. Gesture recognition technology enables presenters to use their hands as a mouse, wirelessly controlling presentations by swiping the air to change slides, and using finger motions to play video and move objects on screen. Theater-quality surround sound provides the audio component for high-impact, engaging presentations.

“Business is won in presentation,” added Anderson. “Presentation technology is evolving quickly and today’s top executives need presentations to be as engaging and clever as the message and product that’s being delivered. The Pfister Hotel’s new boardroom offers endless possibilities and the unique technology presenters need to stand out and be heard.”

The conference room addition will be followed by a renovation of the hotel’s 176 tower guest rooms, which is slated to begin in fall 2013.

Jenna Kashou spent the past six months at Milwaukee’s Pfister Hotel, not with a suitcase but an iPad.

To Kashou, the folks traipsing through the lobby were not just travelers, brides, businessmen, families on vacation, school bleacher salesmen and afternoon tea aficionados. They were people with stories to tell.

As the Pfister Hotel’s narrator in residence, Kashou sought out guests and visitors, learned their story and wrote a twice-weekly blog illustrated with photos and video.

“You need a lot of guts to go up to somebody and say, ‘Hey, why are you here at the Pfister?’ So it’s a little daunting,” said Kashou, whose last name is pronounced like the nut.

Hotel lobbies are a great place to observe humanity, and the Pfister’s is no different. Kashou, whose tour of literary duty ended last week, met folks with common and uncommon stories. Like the British woman who discovered she had a half sister in America when her sibling, who is 20 years younger, found her on Facebook. The British woman’s husband gave her a trip to Milwaukee, including airfare and a week’s stay at the Pfister, as a Christmas present so the sisters could meet

Or the 94-year-old woman celebrating her birthday at the Pfister with her son, who flies in from Hong Kong each year to visit his mother on her birthday. She credits bowling and tap dancing for her longevity.

Or the couple who won a night at the historic hotel in a Kentucky Derby contest at a local restaurant; they had been dating a year and the man proposed to his fiancée at the hotel. They celebrated with chocolate-covered strawberries served on a plate that said: “Congratulations!”

“You really get treated like a celebrity. You’re part of the staff but also a fly on the wall. It’s been awesome,” Kashou said as she sipped a glass of water from the bar in the beautiful ornate lobby.

Kashou, 31, was the fifth narrator at the Pfister, which started the program 2 1/2 years ago as a spinoff of the hotel’s popular artist in residence.

She learned of the program through social media more than a year ago, applied and didn’t make the cut. But she was encouraged to apply again, submitting a lengthy application, résumé and examples of published work. As a finalist, she was invited to the hotel to write a couple of blogs based on interviews with guests and sit down for a videotaped interview.

Narrators in residence receive a $1,000 monthly stipend, free parking and a small expense account to buy drinks or meals while on the job. In return, they write at least two blogs each week for six months, spending 10 hours a week at the hotel.

Kashou could write about almost anything she wanted, though she was told to shy away from celebrities and ghosts at the Pfister and to focus on guests rather than employees. She’s not a sports nut, so she didn’t recognize professional athletes staying at the Pfister. Most of her blog postings were about guests, but she did write about Pfister employees with interesting backgrounds, including a woman in catering who is an opera singer and a man in security who volunteers to help homeless veterans.

This year, 30 people applied for the May-October narrator. Molly Snyder, a senior writer at OnMilwaukee.com, started on May 1. She’ll collaborate with artist in residence Stephanie Barenz on a book.

“When anyone talks about the Pfister, whenever they walk in the door, there’s always some sort of story, like my parents got married here or I had my first job here,” said Cassy Scrima, area director of marketing for Marcus Hotels. “We thought it would be a good way to tell our guests’ stories through this narrator blog.”

A Mequon native who earned degrees in Spanish and mass communication at the University of Iowa, Kashou is a grant writer at Radio Milwaukee. She also writes the weekly “Girl About Town” blog for MilwaukeeMag.com.

Kashou found her stories through tips from Pfister staff, from hanging out in the lobby, restaurants and lounges and by simply walking up to someone and talking to them. When she saw a group posing for a photo, Kashou volunteered to snap pictures and learned it was a reunion of five men who hadn’t seen each other since they attended Washington University in the early 1960s.

Sometimes people noticed her typing on her iPad or MacBook at the hotel bar and asked why she was still working on a Friday evening. That led to more conversations and stories for her blog.

She talked to folks at various events at the hotel, ranging from fundraisers and a weekly writer’s gathering to a networking event for Hispanic professionals and ballroom dance competition.

She struck up a conversation with a Michigan woman visiting the Pfister for a weekend and to break the ice, Kashou asked what she did for a living. The woman slid over a business card that said: “I trade stocks for a giving.” Kashou learned the unassuming woman had donated more than $50,000 to charity in a decade of stock picking.

“Everybody was flattered that someone would take an interest in their story,” said Kashou.

THE PFISTER® HOTEL NAMES MOLLY SNYDER NEXT NARRATOR IN RESIDENCE

Milwaukee, Wis., May 3, 2013 – The historic Pfister® Hotel in downtown Milwaukee, which is owned and operated by Marcus Hotels & Resorts, has named Molly Snyder its sixth “Pfister Narrator.” In this role, she will spend time in the hotel’s lobby and public spaces, speaking with visitors and guests and sharing their stories on The Pfister’s award-winning blog (blog.thepfisterhotel.com). As narrator, Snyder will be posting blog entries at least twice each week over a six-month period.

“I am honored to be the Pfister Narrator,” said Snyder. “The position combines the things that matter to me the most: writing, Milwaukee and human connection.”

Snyder has lived in Milwaukee her entire life. She started keeping a diary when she was four and at age 10 published her first poem, called “The Unicorn,” in the now-defunct Shorewood Herald. Today, she writes less about mythical creatures and more about Milwaukee people and places. She is a senior writer at OnMilwaukee.com, where she has worked for the last 12 years. Telling people’s stories is her passion.

Snyder’s articles, essays and creative writings have appeared in many publications, including The Writer, The Sun and USA Today. She is also a radio personality who has regularly contributed to WISN, 102.1FM and WMYX.

Snyder was chosen to serve as narrator based on her writing style, professional experience and personality. She was selected from a pool of qualified applicants by a review panel consisting of local writers, editors and representatives from the hotel. She will be replacing Jenna Kashou, who has been blogging for the hotel since November. Snyder will begin her residency as narrator this week. During her time at the hotel, she will collaborate on a book project with Pfister Artist-in-Residence Stephanie Barenz.

“Molly knows Milwaukee and has a reputation as a brilliant storyteller,” said Cassy Scrima, marketing director for Marcus Hotels & Resorts. “We look forward to her contributions to the blog and know she’ll do a wonderful job of representing The Pfister while sharing the stories of our guests.”

The Pfister’s narrator program and blog have been gaining national attention in the hotel industry. In 2012, the hotel received a Social Hotel Award from HOTELS Magazine, a leading industry publication, in the category of “Best Blog.” The inaugural Social Hotel Award winners were recognized for excellence in social media marketing.

Milwaukee’s Spring Gallery Night & Day took place on Friday and Saturday (April 19 & 20), and Third Coast Daily was all over the city capturing the highlights. The quarterly event marked the opening of many new shows (at locations including the Walker’s Point Center for the Arts, Sky High Gallery, Katie Gingrass Gallery and Tory Folliard Gallery), served as the welcome reception for the Pfister Artist-in-Residence Stephanie Barenz and coincided with Kenilworth’s annual Open House on Saturday.

We hope you enjoyed Spring Gallery Night & Day as much as we did. The next official Gallery Night will be July 26, but arts lovers can also look forward to Bay View Gallery Night on May 31.

A new lounge for guests only has opened at The Pfister Hotel, the company said Monday in a news release.

The Pfister Club Lounge on the 23rd floor offers views of the city skyline and Lake Michigan at 424 E. Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee. It will be open continuously from Sunday evening to Friday evening, serving breakfast in the morning, snacks and beverages throughout the day and appetizers in the evening. Pfister, owned by The Marcus Corp., is not revealing the cost of the project.

Admission is free to guests of the upper floors of the hotel tower. Other guests can upgrade their reservations to include club admission for an additional fee.

The space previously was a board room, Twenty 3. That room has moved about 50 feet down the hall, said April Dart, a spokeswoman for The Pfister.

The hotel also is planning to renovate the tower’s 176 guest rooms starting in fall with new wall coverings, carpet, window treatments, furniture, fixtures and bathrooms, Dart said.

The changes could be a response to additional competition downtown. The Milwaukee Marriott Downtown is scheduled to open across the street in mid-July, and several other hotels are planned or have recently opened in the area.
